Help Your Child Succeed in School Building the Habit of Good Attendance Early

Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school and themselves.  Start building this good habit by helping your children learn that going to school on time, every day is important.  Good attendance will help children do well in school and later in life!  What can you do?

  • Set a regular bedtime and have a morning routine.
  • Lay clothes, lunches and pack backpacks the night before.
  • Send your child to school unless he/she is truly sick.  Keep in mind minor complaints frequently go away once a student is in class. If your child is truly ill, they will let their teacher know and be sent to the office for further review.
  • Develop back up plans for getting to school if something comes up.
  • Avoid medical appointments when school is in session.

Three Key Ideas for Parents about the Common Core State Standards

Thinking Deeply – The Common Core emphasizes critical thinking.  It requires students to analyze more, discuss more, evaluate more, justify more and explain their thinking and understanding deeply, especially in writing.  Take-Away:  Really thinking deeply is hard.  Let it BE hard, help your child talk it out.

Integrating Learning – The Common Core emphasizes learning across disciplines; reading with math and social studies standards combined into one task for example.  Students spend more time working together with different settings, structures and tools.  Take-Away:  Problems and solutions happen everyday in the real world.

Showing How They Know – The Common Core emphasizes proof and evidence.  Students will be required to explain and show their work and how they arrived at answers.  There is more than one way to solve math problems, for example.  Take-Away:  The new tests will require students to explain how they know.
